The Valley of Magra is named
after the homonymous river that crosses it and that, after receiving the waters of the Vara,
flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Various towns of ancient origins are situated in this part of territory of La Spezia.
To start with, there is the Roman colony of Luni, today an important archaeological centre and seat of a national museum.
Sarzana, Ortonovo, Arcola, Castelnuovo Magra, Vezzano Ligure and Ameglia are the main centres of the valley and appear
as typical villages, rich of historical, artistic and cultural evidences.
Gentle hills follow the river to its outlet in the sea where the sandy beaches of Bocca di Magra,
Marinella and Fiumaretta stretch out. They are well-equipped bathing establishments that announce the coast of Versilia.
In the Valley of Magra, naturalist routes of great interest are not missing.
These are mainly tied to the visit of the Regional Park of Montemarcello which is crossed by many paths with a
typical Mediterranean vegetation and offer enchanting views on the valley and on the Apuan Alps.
