Tellaro and the Octopus

Our Gulf of Poets has one of the most beautiful towns in Italy: Tellaro, located near Lerici, the destination of many tourists, artists and residents of the province.
This small but valuable country houses has long been a legend, whose protagonist (yes!) An octopus.
We are in 1660. At the time Tellaro was a stronghold, with the bell tower overlooking the sea we can find even today; Tellaro belonged the sole task of defending the village of Barbazzano from pirates who at that time populated the waters of Liguria and were attracted by the wealth of the place, especially for the cultivation of olive trees and merchandise.
If they were spotted the pirates on the horizon, the stronghold would be playing the bells and everyone would be prepared to defend the village.

The residents heard the sound of bells immediately went out from their homes and faced the pirates, who were repulsed.
Admittedly, it is a very unusual story. It remains a mystery how much truth there is in the story: the attack could not have ever occurred, or the alarm may have been given by those who were on the lookout, while an imaginative witness seeing any octopus would have given him the firm.
The fact is that the octopus has become a true symbol and was portrayed in the village coat of arms, wrapped around the bell tower.
