92° edition of the Palio del Golfo

The "Palio del Golfo" returns with its 92° edition in the city of La Spezia: a tradition that is rooted in the maritime culture of the people of the Gulf.

As always the whole event of the Palio will be divided into days:

-Friday 4 August at 9pm There will be the classic Night parade from Piazza Brin to Piazza Europa and the ceremony of the return of Palii;

-Saturday, August 5 at 8.30pm there will be the dinner of the townships;

-Sunday, August 6 at 4.30pm you enter the Palio with the opening ceremony, while from 5pm to 7.30pm will challenge all the secondary categories;

At 7.30pm starts the real competition of the Palio del Golfo;

-Monday August 7 at 9pm There will be the prize giving of the Palio and the final parade in Piazza Europa.

The parade

The whole event is, in overall, very articulated. The races are announced during the classic Friday night Parade, which has lately become a theme masked competition.

In fact, the race was preceded by a simple parade to which the representatives of the Townships participated, with their boats and the insignia that were all blessed by the bishop.

Today the parade has become something innovative, spectacular, while the bishop has not lost its blessing over time.

The parade opens with the banners of the three municipalities of the Gulf, sees the townships parade throughout the city showing what they have done, the commitment they have invested to make so great the tradition of the Palio of the Gulf.

At the end of the parade the banners are returned to the mayor of the city after the holders held them for one year; Will be returned on Sunday to the winners of the Palio.

The dinner of the townships

The thirteen townships gather together for the streets and squares of the historic center of La Spezia, where they give life to a party in its own right, full of cheerfulness, classicity, fun but also preparation for the competition of the next day.

The traditional dinner of the townships is open to everyone: anyone can participate by purchasing the ticket at the Palio village and take part in the big table that is held in the evening before the real competition of the Palio del Golfo.

The race of the Palio del Golfo

The real competition of the event takes place on Sunday. At 5pm The way to the races with the lower categories: Palio women's race and at 6pm Palio Junior race.

At 7pm Delineation of the boats, followed by the commemoration of the fallen at sea and at 7.30pm the start to the main race.

The competition itself is born from the tradition of fishing of the so-called 'black gold' or the mussels, better known in the Gulf as 'muscles'.

The fleets boats took part in these competitions to arrive first at the port: This meant being the first to unload the merchandise thus increasing the possibility of gain or, at the end of the day, the early rest.

Since well ninety years the competition is made official by the city of La Spezia that organizes the Palio of the Gulf knowing that all citizens expect a whole year just for this event.

At the race take part the 13 townships: Portovenere, Le Grazie, Fezzano, Cadimare, Manarola,C.R.D.D, Canaletto, Fossamastra, Muggiano, San Terenzo, Venere Azzurra, Lerici and Tellaro.
At the end of the race there will be a firework event to be appreciated both from the city's pier or from its hills.

The end of the event

The event ends on Monday, August 7 at 9pm with the award ceremony of the winners of the Palio, followed by the final parade.

The townships are ready as always to compete, while those who are not competing are ready for a unique event, perhaps the event for excellence of the whole Gulf.
