Three Liberty palaces in La Spezia

Art and culture in the center of La Spezia

La Spezia is a city with a thousand stories and a thousand faces as they tell its palaces, most of them made in Art Nouveau style.

In an itinerary of about thirty minutes here are the three liberty palaces not to be missed:

Palazzo Maggiani, Palazzo Contesso and the Palace of Ice.

In full evidence at the corner of Corso Cavour and via Aldo Ferrari is located the Palazzo Maggiani whose construction dates back to the beginning of the last century and is characterized by a diversified adornment for each floor of its façade. It highlights the decoration with the beautiful angel and, the typical symbols of liberty, the peacock and the sunflower.

It was awarded, for its originality, at the Paris Exhibition of 1922. In 1996, it suffered severe damage caused by a fire.

Also another building, the Ice Palace(Palazzo del Ghiaccio), is worthy of observation for the penguins and polar bears decorated in the façade that, thanks to the sculptor Magli, symbolize its old function: once in fact, the building was the city ice factory. It was built by the architect Oliva that in the city has lent its touch to several architectural complexes such as the Cozzani Theatre, the Civic Theatre, the Government Palace... In short a great man not to be forgotten!

An elegant, wrought-iron dragonfly is a sculpture that characterizes the Contextured Palace, the aristocratic building that years ago was a classy seaside hotel. This palace is located in Piazza Verdi, one of the most important squares of the city, recently restored. The square is an imprint of modernity that blends perfectly with the buildings surrounding century. Not to be missed are the light games of his bows in the night.
