(...)“Allora in una tovaglia bianchissima gli portò due fette di pane arrostito e un gran bicchiere di vernaccia di Corniglia”(...) From " Decameron" by Giovanni Boccaccio,
Corniglia is the smallest village of Cinque Terre, in a central position. It overlooks the sea from its 90 metres above sea level. Almost impenetrable and unreachable, it reminds us of an ancient fort, with its colourful small houses close to one another. It is the only village among the five that has not a direct access to the sea.
To reach the village, Nature challenges us with a demanding access: the famous Lardarina, a long flight of almost 800 steps that begins at the station – off the centre – and it leads us to the top, where the village is.
The small village stretches along the main street that takes to the carrugio: a very narrow street which reaches the main square – Largo Taragio. From here the streets, which lead to the most suggestive corners of the village , divide into a game of very steep flights of stairs.
For example, the small square of Fosso, from which we can admire both the remains of the Genoese fortification, dating from XVI century, and an incredible view, from the top of the tower, over the sea and over all the coast towards Manarola.
Another flight of stairs goes down towards the “Marina” of Corniglia: a little gulf enclosed between the Tre Croci promontory and the characteristic piers, that hosts the boats of the locals.
From here you can arrive at Gùvano beach- reachable on foot or by sea.
This coastal stretch is maybe one of the most characteristic of all the coast, and it is a brilliant touristic destination during the summer.
There are more secret flights of stairs in the village: from the Santa Maria terrace, reachable from the main square, we can admire a 180 degrees view over the
Even in Corniglia, among its carrugi (narrow streets) and its steps, you can enjoy a thousand experiences and memorable afternoons.
