The first village of Cinque Terre, coming from La Spezia, is Riomaggiore, which is built on the slopes of Mount Verugola. Its three cliffs are represented in Riomaggiore’s coat of arms and are the symbol of the village.

The lower part of the valley is filled with the authentic houses of the fishermen, now converted in beautiful apartments, that reach the sea shore, called “La Marina”, which is the original centre of this small fishing village.

In this colorful scene nestled amongst the green vineyards there is the Medieval Castle, which is currently used for events and conventions.

Arm yourself with camera, trekking shoes or mountain-bike, a water bottle, a hat, and a swimsuit... your holidays here can be varied: the village, in fact, offers a lot of different activities.

You can walk along the trails of the National park that lead inland or run along the Ligurian coast which starts from Riomaggiore – a memorable experience in Cinque Terre.

The trails are the most suggestive way to reach Cinque Terre. Proceeding East it is possible to get to Volastra, Campiglia and Portovenere.

For history and folklore lovers it is possible to reach the fourteenth-century Church of San Giovanni Battista or the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Salute, walking along enchanting paths, amongst the typical Ligurian nature.

Those who prefer the sea breeze and the crystalline waters can enjoy the small hidden beaches or bask in the sun on the rocky foreshore. You can also spend the afternoon on a boat discovering the caves and bays in the Protected Marine zone of the National Park, diving and snorkeling in the clear water and exploring its depths.

If you are lucky to meet a local or a friendly fisherman you can go fishing with them out of the protected area to get some fish for dinner.

If you want to enjoy the shadow then take a walk in the narrow inner streets, here you can stop at local wine houses, at the Park’s Local Shop or at some typical restaurants that offer delicious food.

After tasting a glass of Sciacchetrà wine, you won’t want to go home again.
